Piedras Blancas National Park: rainforest biodiversity
Area | 34,642 acres |
Location | Puntarenas Province |
Date of Creation | July, 1991 |
The Piedras Blancas National Park protects the rainforests and beach areas inland of the Golfo Dulce near Golfito, South Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Some time ago, this area was considered the Esquinas Sector of Corcovado National Park. Today, efforts are underway to conserve and protect the biological corridor, which connects these two national parks.
The rainforests, beaches and bays around the northern coast of the Golfo Dulce and the Osa Peninsula; the rugged mountains and river basins of Esquinas River and Piedras Blancas River provide a dense evergreen forest that is home to rare tropical trees, birds, mammals and reptiles. This region, receiving up to 200 inches of rain annually, is true rainforest.
